Accelerated crystallisation process in which a solution is passed by a pump to one or more reverse osmosis modules in which a concentrate of super-satd. soln. is separated from a permeate. The concentrate enters a crystalliser to form crystals which are deposited in a filter from which filtrate flows on to be re-united with the permeate. If desired, the crystallisation can be further accelerated by diffusing a fluid of minute bubbles of inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, through the supersatd. soln.; alternatively, the supersatd. soln. can be subjected via immersed electrodes to an alternating current at about 50 to about 200 hertz. Accelerated crystal sepn. from a soln. esp. the removal of tartar as crystals from wine or other tartar-producing drinks. Rapid elimination of tartar in a continuous process which has no adverse effect on the flavour, appearance or other quality of a wine.
|
