The appliance consists of a cylindrical shell resonator (2) and an input waveguide or SWL (1) or quasi-optical transmission path (q.o.U). Should the waveguide or a corresponding transmission path be over-dimensioned with a correspondingly weak beam angle to spread their preferred arrangement is so that their axis (5) represents the extension of the geometrically optical beams (3) of a selected rotating mode of the resonator. If the waveguide is operating close to its frequency limit the front view is preferably arranged at 90 deg. to the resonator and offset transversely in the x-y plane and the diameter of the resonator is so selected that the plane waves of the waveguide represents the extension of the geometrically optical beams of a selected rotating mode of the resonator. This minimises the reflection in the wave guide or transmission path.
