The production of a pharmaceutical composition with delayed release of active ingredient starts from a polymer containing acidic groups. This polymer contains 10 to 100% hydrophilic groups and 0 to 90% hydrophobic groups. The polymer is reacted with a basic pharmaceutically active compound to give a salt which is soluble or dispersible in water or in organic solvents. The hydrophilic groups in the polymer are derived, for example, from acrylic acid, vinylpyrrolidone, methacrylic acid and/or maleic acid, and the hydrophobic groups in the polymer are derived, for example, from methyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, lauryl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and/or styrene. The pharmaceutically active compound incorporated in the pharmaceutical composition is, for example, an alkaloid, preferably pilocarpine, in particular cocaine or morphine, a local anaesthetic, preferably dibucaine or lidocaine, an analgesic or a sulphonamide, preferably sulphadimethoxine. The pharmaceutical compositions with delayed release of active ingredient produced in accordance with the above statements can, inter alia, be in the form of solids as inserts in body orifices. |
