Isopropanol is produced by direct hydration of propylene in the presence of a catalyst consisting of orthophosphoric acid on a borosilicate carrier under a pressure of 16-20 atm. at 160-200 degrees C, reacted propylene being condensed and recycled. The process gives isopropanol of high purity. Energy requirements are low, and pumps may be used instead of expensive turbocompressors. Catalyst life is long, and selectivity is high. |
