SUBSTD. PYRIDINIUM FLUORIDE SALTS - esp. useful for treating and preventing dental caries

Pyridinium salts of formula (I) are new: (R1 = H or alkyl; R2, at the 2 or 3 posn., is CH2OH, CONH.CH2CH2OH, morpholinocarbonyl or COOR3; R3 = alkyl). They are prepd. by conventional salt formation between R1F and R2-substd. pyridines. (I) are used for treatment or prophylaxis of parodontopathia, dental disease and esp. caries. They are stable in aq. soln., have high ionisation constants, are non-toxic and have good F transport properties. They also strengthen the gums and inhibit formation of plaque and tartar. A specifically claimed cpd., pyrid-3-ylmethanol hydro-fluoride, was prepd. by reacting pyrid-3-ylmethanol with an equiv. of aq. HF.
