An advancing mine roof support system has sets of beams (32) held in contact with the roof over a coal cutting machine (13) and conveyor (14). These are carried by intermediate members mounted on pillars (26) resting on a framework at floor level. This framework travels on parallel sliders (10, 11) extending at right angles to the conveyor. The framework consists of assemblies for each slider, one each end of each slider. Each assembly has an inner unit (25) carrying a pillar (26), attached to its slider (10 or 11). The remainder of the assembly is a parallel outer unit (28 or 29). To advance the roof beams, the sliders can be actuated so as to slide the inner units, leaving the outer units behind. The outer units can then be advanced level with the inner units again, by actuator cylinders (30) connecting them.
