Prodn. of rolling bearing rings starts from rolled steel flat with high formability and with the grain flow at least near the surface being parallel to the surface, from which circular rings are cut out and pressed in the desired shape in their thickness direction; at the same time the eventual working surface is improved by compression of the structure. The ring is finally hardened and ground. Bearings and rings in pure and homogeneous steel is obtd. from commercial quality steel in which a rolled ingot is split longitudinally into bar of lower and higher purity. The latter is used to make bearings in the normal way. Hardening may be done by heating and quenching followed by stepwise cooling to -60 degrees C to stabilise the structure.
