1464709 Electromagnetically controlled seat belt retractor FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 23 May 1975 [10 June 1974] 22613/75 Heading A3V An electromagnetically controlled seat belt retractor 10 has a reel spring-loaded to retract a belt coupled to it. A cam 16 is journalled concentrically with the reel, is biassed by spring washer 17 into frictional engagement with it and capable of limited rotation with it. Cam lobe 18 lies in the path of locking bar 15 when cam 16 is in the Figure 1 position as occurs during retraction or in the fully retracted condition. Protracting the belt causes cam 16 to rotate clockwise to the Figure 2 position (not shown) where cam lobe 19 lies in the path of bar 15. Movement of cam 16 is limited by movement of bar 22 on the cam moving in slot 21 in the retractor frame side wall 13 to contact solenoid 27. Release of the pulling force on the belt reverses the reel and drags cam 16 back to the Figure 1 position during which movement bar 15 engages a toothed ratchet wheel fixed to the reel preventing further belt protraction. If however the solenoid is energised, e.g. when the seat is occupied and the transmission lever is at neutral or park position, bar 22 is held against it and lobe 19 prevents movement of bar 15 into reel locking position allowing the reel to rotate in protraction or retraction directions.
