1464848 Polymeric pigments MOBIL OIL CORP 14 Feb 1975 [15 March 1974] 6380/75 Heading C3P Organic pigments are produced by (1) slurry polymerizing styrene and divinylbenzene in the presence of an alkali metal-containing anionic polymerization initiator in a liquid aliphatic hydrocarbon slurrying medium in the presence of 0À1-10 wt. per cent, based on styrene, of a block polymer dispersing agent, and (2) terminating the polymerization with an organic dye or dye precursor, or with a coupling agent followed by subsequent reaction with such a dye or dye precursor. In Example 1, a lithiumterminated styrene/divinylbenzene copolymer is reacted with the dye precursor 4,41-bis(dimethylamino)benzophenone, followed by conversion to pigments by either (i) iodine treatment followed by aqueous HCl/methanol, (ii) air oxidation followed by dilute sulphuric acid, or (iii) air oxidation followed by aqueous HCl. In Examples 2-4, a similar copolymer is reacted with tolylene-2,4-diisocyanate followed by acetyl chloride (to neutralize residual lithium cation), and the reactive isocyanate groups are then reacted with the following dyes:- (2) 4- phenylazophenol, (3) 4-phenylazoresorcinol, and (4) 1,4-di(isopropylamino)anthraquinone.
|
