The releasable dowel comprises a tubular body (4) provided with a tapered key whereby the body can be secured in a hole (2) into which it is inserted. The key is seated in a longitudinal slot near the inner end of the dowel. The body is provided with an internal thread for a grub screw (11) by which the key is pushed into the locking position. The remaining outer part of the thread is then available for a screw (12) for fastening an article (3) to the wall in which the hole is provided. In a modification the dowel has an external thread with a nut for tightening the key.
