In an activated sludge treatment of sewage, the aeration tank is divided by partitions suspended from the tank cover into several chambers, each with its own aerator. The first upstream chamber is connected to atmosphere as a source of oxygen and the last downstream chamber is fitted with a gas outlet. The immersion aerators can be replaced by pressure aerators which draw in air from above the level of the preceding chamber. Another version has immersion aerators, each of which draws in air from above the fluid level in its own chamber, with communicating ports in all partitions. A further version uses surface aerators in each chamber, again with communicating ports in the partitions. This is a simple and inexpensive way of eliminating all evil smelling gases from the sewage completely.
|
