1463732 English/metric indicators GAMET PRODUCTS Ltd 3 Oct 1975 [8 Nov 1974] 48559/74 Heading B3B A device for indicating translational movement of a member selectively in either of two systems of units which is attachable to a machine tool and engageable with a shaft such as a lathe feed screw rotatable for example by hand, comprises an assembly 4, 5 which is securable to a fixed part of the machine tool and on which is rotatably mounted a ring 3 retained on the assembly by a ring 11. The ring 3 is connectible to the machine shaft 1 by a pin 2 for rotation therewith on the member 4 of the assembly. A dial 13 is mounted on the ring 3 and is clampable thereto by a locking ring 15, the release of which permits zero setting of the dial 13. A second dial 17 is mounted for rotation on the part 4 of the subassembly and both the dials 13 and 17 are provided with internal gear teeth 16, 19 respectively which mesh with a common idler gear 10 carried by the sub assembly. The dials have differing members of gear teeth (127 and 125) to provide the required conversion ratio in relation to the systems of units being used. A sleeve 20 surrounds the dials, whose outer surfaces are graduated in the respective systems of units, and is provided with openings 180 degrees apart so that by rotating the sleeve through 180 degrees the openings will selectively display either one of the scales in the desired system of units. The location of the openings is defined by detents 29, 28 between the sleeve and part 4, the rotation of the sleeve is controlled by the bias of dish springs 26. In the embodiment described the device is for use in indicating displacement of a machine tool slide in English or metric units.
