Air filter for car engine - has thermostat actuating mechanically linked butterfly valves to control air temperature

The air filter (10) for a car engine has two inlets (19, 20) each fitted with a butterfly valve (27, 28). The two valves are connected by a rod (35) so that when one valve is fully open the other is fully closed and vice-versa. One inlet (19) draws in cold air whilst the other inlet (20) receives air which has been heated by passing over the exhaust manifold. A thermostat (22) senses the temperature of the air entering the carburettor, and adjusts the positions of the valves (27, 28) so that a constant temperature is maintained. This facilitates steady evapn. of the fuel and therefore improves combustion efficiency.
