An explosion proofed lighting unit, in partic. a signal light, with a light source mounted in a protected internal section, has the light source connected with a solid state lamp (16), the attachment wires of which are connected through leads (24) to a connector (26). The support or mounting is in the form of a housing (10) within which the light source, connector leads (24) and connector (26) are situated as are attachment wires (22). The interior space of the housing (10) is filled with a cast resin material (30) to that a completely internally sealed compound unit is formed.
