Ethers, esp. asymmetric ethers are manufactured by reacting (a) a water-sol. alcohol and (b) an olefin or a water-insol. alcohol in the presence of an ion-exchange resin etherification catalyst to obtain a reaction mixture contg. unreacted water-sol. alcohol and the desired ether. This mixture is then contacted with water in the presence of a benzene hydrocarbon and the resulting aqs. phase containing the water-sol. alcohol is separated from the benzene hydrocarbon phase contg. the desired ether free from water-sol. alcohol. The ethers are obtained in high yields, i.e. :80%. They can be separated from the benzene-hydrocarbon, but advantageously can be used as their solns. in the benzene hydrocarbon for direct addition to fuels to improve their octane ratings. |
