The invention comprises methine dyes of the formula <FORM:1058662/C4-C5/1> wherein R is alkylene, R2 is substituted or unsubstituted phenylene, R1 is hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl of 1 to 4 carbons or together with the nitrogen atom to which it is attached forms part of a ring fused to phenylene R2, X completes a dicarboximido group and Y is nitrile, carbamoyl, carbalkoxy or cyano-carbalkoxy. When R1 forms a ring fused to R2, the dyes may have the formula <FORM:1058662/C4-C5/2> where R, X and Y are as above, R3, R4 and R5 are each hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbons and Z represents a substituent or substituents in the 5, 7 or 8 positions selected from halogen or alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbons. The dicarboximido group X may be derived from phthalic, tetrachlorophthalic, 4-carboxy-, 3-amino- and 3-nitro - phthalic, tetrahydrophthalic, cyclohexane -1:2 - dicarboxylic, bicyclo - (2:2:1)-5-heptene - 2:3 - dicarboxylic, succinic, glutaric, maleic, methyl-maleic and citraconic acids. The dyes are made by condensing a compound of the formula NC.CH2.Y, such as malonitrile, isopropyl cyanoacetate and b -cyanoethyl cyanoacetate, with an aldehyde of the formula <FORM:1058662/C4-C5/3> The dyes free from sulpho and carboxyl groups dye polyester, cellulose ester, polyamide and acrylic fibres in the mass, from aqueous dispersion or from an aqueous emulsion (see Division D1).ALSO:N - (2 - (N - ethyl - formyl - m - toluidino) ethyl) - phthalimide (m.p. 127-128.5 DEG C.) and 6 - formyl - N - b - phthalimidoethyl - 2 : 7-dimethyl - 1 : 2 : 3 : 4 - tetrahydroquinoline are made by heating with dimethylformamide and phosphorus oxychloride N - (2 - (N - ethyl-m - toluidino)ethyl) - phthalimide and N - b -phthalimidoethyl - 2 : 7 - dimethyl - 1 : 2 : 3 : 4-tetrahydroquinoline respectively, which compounds are made by condensing N-b -aminoethyl - N - ethyl - m - toluidine and N - (b -aminoethyl) - 2 : 7 - dimethyl - 1 : 2 : 3 : 4-tetrahydroquinoline respectively with phthalic anhydride.ALSO:Hydrophobic fibres such as linear polyester, cellulose ester, acrylic and polyamide fibres are dyed with dyes of the formula:- <FORM:1058662/D1-D2/1> where R is alkylene, R2 is substituted or unsubstituted phenylene, R1 is hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or forms with the nitrogen a ring fused to phenylene R2, X completes a dicarboximido group and Y is cyano, carbomoyl, carbalkoxy or cyano-carbalkoxy, by dissolving the dye in ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, adding an aqueous 2% fatty methyl tauride and 0.5% sodium lignin sulphonate solution with stirring to form an emulsion, adding water and a chlorinated benzene emulsion and then adding the textile fibre, working without heat, then at 80 DEG C and then boiling for one hour. The fibre is then rinsed, scoured in soap and soda ash solution, rinsed and dried.
