[Also in Division H2] Apparatus for crimping connectors to wire 59 comprises a gripping mechanism 15 to grip the wire, a stripper mechanism 25 operated after the wire has been gripped and a hammer 45 moved relative to an anvil 44 by an air cylinder 48 through a toggle linkage 46 which has one link pivoted to an adjustable block 47. The gripping mechanism is mounted on a frame 14 and the jaws 18, Fig. 2 (not shown), are moved together by a cam wedge 22 moved by an air cylinder 23. The wire is inserted through the open jaws manually and abuts an adjustable push-rod 38 of a microswitch 37 to start the apparatus. The jaws are moved to grip the wire and then a pair of stripping blades 35 are moved together by an air cylinder 33 acting through a toggle linkage 31. A pair of adjustable stops 39 prevent the wire core being severed. The blades are pivoted to a carriage 26 slidable on guide rails 24 which is moved by the cylinder 33 to strip the wire. The cylinder 48 is then activated to extend the toggle linkage 46 to move the hammer to the anvil. A bellcrank lever 52, Fig. 2 (not shown), is pivoted to the front wall 13 of the apparatus frame and has a finger 53 at one end which is spring- biased into a channel 54 to feed connectors 57 to the anvil. A ramp is provided in the channel to prevent any reverse feed of the connectors when the finger is returned. The finger is spaced from the connector to be pushed to raise the hammer slightly before the feed commences. Coacting shear blades 63 on the anvil and the hammer separate the connectors from the strip 55 and the scrap is ejected down a shoot 64. The shoot 65 guides the stripped insulation to a container. An air jet directs compressed air on to the stripper blades to remove the insulation. The toggle linkage adjustment is effected by a micrometer-type adjustment to alter the upper and lower limits of the hammer.</p> |
