An organosilicon resin is made by reacting the disilanol <FORM:1105621/C3/1> with a silane having the formula R11b SiA4- b or with a partial hydrolysate or polymer derived therefrom, wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon (h.c.) or substituted h.c. radical, R1 is a divalent aromatic radical, R11 is R, H or a halogen, A is -ORIII or -NR2IV, RIII is R, RIV is R or H, and b is 0 or 1. Preferably 1.5 to 3.0 moles of silane are reacted with 4 moles of disilanol, in the presence of a catalyst and an inert solvent. In a typical Example (1) a mixture of 4,41-bis(hydroxydiphenylsily) diphenyl ether, tetraethoxysilane, toluene and stannous octoate was refluxed to yield a resin solution from which a film was cast on a glass plate and heated to 180 DEG C. for 20 minutes, whereby an insoluble, infusible film was obtained. Uses.-For casting films and for making laminates and moulding powders. |
