1,264,609. Hydrorefining naphthalenes. MONSANTO CO. 6 May, 1970 [7 May, 1969], No. 21832/70. Heading C5E. Concentrates of naphthalenes containing any of a variety of impurities and having a boiling range within the 325-575‹ F. range are purified by (1) passing the concentrate in liquid phase with hydrogen upwardly through a first reaction zone containing a noble metal catalyst supported on alumina, the average temperature within the zone being 100-500‹ F.; (2) passing the effluent through a vaporization zone wherein is is heated to a temperature such that partial but not total vaporization is effected; and (3) passing the effluent from (2) with hydrogen through a second reaction zone at 500-750‹ F. and 200-1000 p.s.i.g. pressure, said zone containing a desulphurization catalyst containing a Group VIb or VIII metal, oxide or sulphide, the effluent being completely vaporized in said zone. The desulphurization catalyst may be supported, e.g. on alumina, silica-alumina, titania, zirconia, silica and aluminosilicates. In examples, alkylnaphthalene concentrates are purified using as catalyst in stage (1) Pd/alumina and in stage (3) cobalt molybdate/alumina. |
