[Also in Division B3] A machine for performing a plurality of operations on a workpiece, e.g. machining operations or marking or spraying a workpiece, comprises a frame 10 supporting a table 11 on which is disposed a work supporting non-rotary turret 21. On top of the turret 21 is an indexable head 22 which carries a plurality of work gripping clamps 32 to move a workpiece or workpieces through a number of work stations arranged radially around the turret 21. Below the table 11 are mounted shafts 67, 72 each of which carry driving gears 73. The work stations may comprise a work head 125 having a post 126 which extends down through an opening in the table 11 and which carries a gear 124 to mesh with the appropriate driving gear 73. The rotary motion of the post 126 is converted by gear elements 127, 128, shaft 129, cam 132, lever 133 and pinion 137 to a reciprocating movement of a machine spindle or ejecting device. The work heads 125 are readily removable for re-positioning on the table 11 by inserting thepost 126 in an appropriate opening in the table to engage a driving gear 73 on one of the shafts 67, 72. The work stations may indude milling or drilling spindles or may provide means for punching, welding, spraying or marking a workpiece. In the embodiment described for inserting locking pads in bolts, an air blowing station, a pellet insertion station and an ejection station is provided. The indexable head 22 may carry a plurality of workpieces or a single workpiece which is operated on simultaneously by the work stations. The indexable head 22 may be continuously rotated, e.g. for spraying or marking a workpiece. Drive details.-A drive means 14 rotates a pair of chain wheels 56, one of which drives a chain 62 to rotate the shafts 67 and 72 and a cam 77, the other of which drives a chain 58 to continuously rotate a shaft 61 which operates through a clutch 88 to index the head 22. The cam 77 operates a lever 78 to engage the clutch 88 to cyclically index the head 22. Auxiliary drive means are provided to rotate spindles at the work heads 125. The clutch 88 (Fig. 8, not shown) includes a slidable part having a cam surface (95) which is engaged by a pin (94) on the end of lever 78 to disengage dog teeth. A spring detent 96 on the lever 78 engages a notch on the slidable part to prevent further rotation. |
