1303484 Para-oxybenzoyl copolyesters CARBORUNDUM CO 18 May 1970 [28 May 1969] 23913/70 Heading C3R A p-oxybenzoyl copolyester is made up of recurring units of Formulµ (I), (II) and (III): wherein -X- is -O- or -SO 2 -, m is 0 or 1, n is 0 or 1, the bonds to the benzene rings of Formulµ (II) and (III) are meta or para to one another, preferably para, the mole ratio of (I) to (II) is between 1 : 100 and 100 : 1 and that of (II) to (III) is between 10 : 15 and 15 : 10 and adjacent units are bonded exclusively by ester linkages. The total number of units is 3 to 600 and preferably 30 to 200. The copolyesters are prepared by condensing together p-hydroxybenzoic acid, iso- or tere-phthalic acids and an atomatic diol corresponding to Formula (III), or esters thereof, the hydroxyacid preferably being condensed first with one of the other components to give an intermediate which is then treated with the third component, whereby a polyester having a regular alternation of the three units is produced. The examples describe the preparation of copolyesters by (a) condensation of p-hydroxybenzoic acid with diphenyl iso- or tere-phthalate, or a mixture of the two isomers, in the presence of phenyl acetate, hydrogen chloride and, optionally, a highboiling solvent, followed by condensation of the intermediate products (X), with hydroquinone, resorcinol or p,p1-biphenol or (b) condensation of p-acetoxybenzoic acid, p- or m-phenylenediacetate and iso- or terephthalic acid, the acetate esters being added as such or formed in situ from the parent compounds and acetic anhydride.
