<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent color smear even when the speed of the intermediate transfer belt is corrected and controlled based upon information about a scale on the intermediate transfer belt read by the sensor. <P>SOLUTION: The scale 5 formed on the external face of the intermediate transfer belt 10 over the entire circumference of it is read by the sensor 6, thereby detecting the actual speed of the intermediate transfer belt 10 based upon the detected information. A control device 70 corrects the speed of the intermediate transfer belt 10 according to the actual speed. Since the sensor 6 is disposed between the photoreceptors 40Y and 40C, the position in which the sensor 6 reads the scale 5 and the image transfer positions where images on the photoreceptors 40 are transferred to the intermediate transfer belt 10 are close to each other. Thus, the belt speed obtained with the sensor 6 and the belt speed in the image transfer positions match.
