A vehicle with electrically powered cabin heaters and coolers receives a remote signal 110 from an operator instructing the vehicle to bring a cabin temperature to a desired temperature before the vehicle engine is running, and in response, the vehicle determines whether a battery state of charge exceeds a threshold 112 and if so, activates the cabin heater or cooler to condition cabin air. The remote signal may be from a key fob, phone, PDA or computer, which may also display climate information such as cabin temperature. The vehicle may be hybrid electric, fuel cell or have a conventional engine (18, fig 1). A timer may turn off the heater or cooler after a time period (e.g. 5 or 6 minutes) to prevent draining the battery; and be programmed with times of the day when remote control is permitted or prevented. Window, seat and steering wheel heaters or coolers may be controlled. An external power supply may provide power to the heaters or coolers. |
