[Also in Division A5] A light tubular plastic casing containing air heating, electrical resistance elements is incorporated in the bonnet end of the flexible hose of a portable hair dryer, the hose being that which conducts previously heated air from a conventional heater/blower unit to the hair bonnet. The diameter of the plastic casing is only slightly larger than the hose diameter, and it is suitably formed of two semi-cylindrical interlocking halves 30 and 32. The heating element comprises a resistance coil 40, wound around a longitudinally extending insulating plate 42, and surrounded by a metal enclosure to shield the casing walls from direct radiation; the enclosure is formed from a base plate 44 and a U-shaped member 46, with the base plate supported on ribs which are part of the plastic casing, and the insulating plate is mounted perpendicularly to the base plate. There is a high temperature insulating member between the base plate and the plastic ribs. The U-shaped shield 46, suitably carries a conventional bi-metallic thermostat on one outer side, and a fusible link 74 may be mounted at one end of the insulating plate, both being serially connected to the heating element 40 to prevent overheating. As air flows through the casing it passes over the element after which it may be admixed with cooler air at the walls of the casing by an upright V-shaped baffle 76. The terminal end of the casing (i.e. the end proximal to the hair bonnet) may include a perforated or mesh screen 78 to prevent entry of foreign objects to the heating element. The heater is intended to reheat air, cooled by its passage along the flexible hose, immediately prior to the entry of the air into the hairdrying bonnet.</p> |
