1322738 Coating CIBA-GEIGY AG 15 June 1970 [16 June 1969] Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Oil- and water-proof coatings are obtained from homopolymers and copolymers of compounds of formula wherein m is 1 to 18, R 1 is -CH=CH 2 or -C(CH 3 )=CH 2 and R is the ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon radical derived from fumaric, maleic, citraconic, mesaconic or itaconic acid. Lists of comonomers are given, those exemplified being n-octyl-methacrylate, 2-ethyl-hexyl methacrylate, methyl, ethyl, isobutyl, 2-methoxyethyl and 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl vinyl ethers and styrene. The coating composition may contain polymers of other ethylenically unsaturated compounds. Lists of such other polymers are given, those exemplified being poly-n-octyl methacrylate and ethylenepropylene and butadiene-styrene copolymers. Substrates specified are fibres, e.g. cotton, wool, fibreglass, silk, regenerated cellulose, cellulose ethers and esters, polyamides, polyesters, polyacrylonitrile, polyacrylates and blends thereof, or leather, paper, wood, masonry, metal, plastics, glass and painted surfaces. Coatings are applied by conventional methods, e.g. dipping, spraying, brushing, padding and roll coating.
