The mechanism is operated by a single manual crank handle (35) from the inside of a building and is used to open or close pivoting window shutters inc. a ratchet (32) which allows the shutters to be set at any angle. Intermeshing bevelled gear wheels (30, 31) may transmit geared down rotation from an input shaft (33) to a perpendicular output shaft (25). A universal joint coupling (34) connects the crank handle to the input shaft with the recoil spring (29) ratchet acting on the input gear wheel (31). A pinion on the end of the output shaft may drive a crown wheel and, thus drive a crossed chain loop actuating pin-jointed elbow arms at connected to each shutter.
