Diesel engine exhaust particulates are electrically charged during the formation of the particulates in the engine combustion chambers. Consequently the particulates are able to be collected in a particle collector (52) provided by a static electric field precipitator powered by a high voltage power supply (53) of several thousand volts. The collector includes spaced electrodes connected to the high voltage power supply and to ground in alternation. Particulates of sub-micron size enter the collector from the engine and are retained on the electrode surfaces by electrostatic and adhesion forces. Particles of larger size than the sub-micron particles break loose from the electrodes and re-entrain in the gas moving through the collector. These larger particles are readily removed by a particle collection device such as an inertial separator or scrubber located downstream of the collector. |
