Hydrogen is prepared by passing a mixture comprising carbon monoxide and steam at a temperature of 400-725‹ F. over a catalyst comprising a caesium salt of an acid having an ionization constant below 1 Î 10<SP>-3</SP> deposited on a support having a high surface area. Hydrogen sulphide may be present as an impurity in the gas stream. Suitable caesium salts are the carbonate, bicarbonate, biphosphate, aluminate, hydroxide, acetate and tungstate, and suitable supports are activated carbon, activated alumina, silica-alumina and zeolites. The initial gas mixture may be made by catalytically steam-reforming hydrocarbons, e.g. natural gas, or by reacting coal, coke, or heavy feedstock with steam, with or without H 2 . |
