[Also in Division C5] Salts of straight chain monobasic carboxylic acids are prepared from a mixture of straight chain and branched chain primary alcohols by heating the mixture at a temperature of 240- 340‹ C. with a stoichiometric deficiency of an alkali metal hydroxide or alkaline earth metal hydroxide based on the straight chain primary alcohols. The alcohols may have 4-30 C atoms but preferably have 12-24 C atoms. The preferred conditions include the use of a 10% excess of straight chain alcohol over sodium or potassium hydroxide at a temperature of 330‹ C. Straight chain monobasic acids may be prepared from these salts by treatment with acid e.g. with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid. |
