An internal combustion engine piston 10 comprises a fire ring assembly 34 disposed with axial clearance in a groove 32 located in the head land 30 between the top compression ring 20 and the top surface 28 of the piston. The assembly 34 comprises two split rings 36, 38 each having, in the free condition, an outside diameter substantially the same as the bore of the cylinder 12 and an inside diameter greater than that of the bottom of the groove 32 whereby in operation the rings dish and move axially and also rotate in the groove. The outer peripheral surface 40 of the rings 36, 38 may be chromium plated. The piston has a second compression ring 22 and an oil scraper ring 24. In a modification, Fig. 4, for an aluminium piston 50 the fine ring assembly 34 is disposed in a groove 56 in a cast iron insert 54. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), both the ring assembly 34 and the compression ring 20 are housed in grooves in a cast iron insert. |
