Microcapsules are prepared by dissolving a cellulose ester in a water immiscible liquid, which optionally may contain a suspended solid, and dispersing the product in an aqueous medium containing alkali whereby the cellulose ester is hydrolysed to form a cellulose layer covering the droplets.
