[Also in Division G2] Ethylenically unsaturated compounds are photopolymerized by irradiating with light having wavelengths in the range of 2500- 7000 Š in the presence of, as photopolymerization initiator, either (a) an azole compound of the general formula where X is O, S, NH or NR (R being C 1-C4 alkyl or benzyl), R 1 and R 2 are the same or different and represent H, halogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl, and R 3 represents H, halogen, C 1- C 4 alkyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl, naphthyl or styryl; or (b) a vinylimidazole polymer (e.g. a copolymer with methyl methacrylate) comprising recurring units of the formula The rate of polymerization can be increased by inclusion of an acridine, phenazine or fluorescein dye. The unsaturated compound used may be one or more of styrene, acrylamide, methacrylamide, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, divinylbenzene, glycol diacrylates, N,N1-alkylene-bis-acrylamides, allyl esters of polyacrylic acid, maleic esters of polyvinyl alcohol, polyolefins containing residual unsaturation, unsaturated polyesters, cellulose acetomaleates and allyl cellulose. Polymerization may be effected in bulk, emulsion, suspension or solution; polymerization can also be carried out with the reaction components coated on a base or support. The polymerization components may include a hydrophilic or hydrophobic colloid as carrier or binding agent, e.g. polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl butyral, partially saponified cellulose acetate, gelatine, casein, starch, carboxymethyl cellulose or polyvinyl alcohol. The photopolymerization products are useful as adhesives, coating and impregnating agents, safety glass interlayers and optical lenses; the polymerization process is also useful in the preparation of photographic images for printing, etching or photo-copying processes. In examples, acrylamide and triethylene glycol diacrylate are each homopolymerized in aqueous glycol methyl ether.
