Hydroxy-amino-benzamides - from methyl amino phenols and carbamoyl chloride

In the title process a methyl amino phenol where the amino groups are protected by acetylation and the phenol group by etherification and the para position to either the amino or hydroxy group is occupied by an inert radical is reacted with a carbamoyl chloride opt. in the presence of AlCl3. Substn. of -CONH2 is effected in the other position para to the NH2 or OH group. Thus 2-methoxy-4-acetylamino toluol is reacted with ClCONH2 to give 2-acetylamino-4-methoxy-5-methyl benzamide.
