A rotary arc furnace for the production of acetylene from methane is provided with a rotary/reciprocating scraper to remove carbon deposits. As shown, the arc between a cathode 3 and water-cooled tubular anode 4 is rotated in the electromagnetic field of a coil 11. Methane or like hydrocarbon introduced at 5, and water introduced through a quench ring 6 cools the product and the scraper 21. The scraper is mounted on a hollow shaft 26 by which it can be reciprocated by a pneumatic piston 32 while it is being rotated by a motor 39 driving through gears 37, 38, to remove the carbon deposit 12.
