dl - 6 - Phenyl - 2,3,5,6 - tetrahydroimidazo[2,1-b]thiazole is obtained in a process which comprises heating the corresponding d or lcompound with a strong non-aqueous base, e.g. sodium hydride, sodium amide or potassium t-butylate. The racemization is preferably effected between 20 DEG and 120 DEG C. Subsequently the racemate may be resolved by the usual procedures e.g. with d-10-camphorsulphonic acid.
