[Also in Division D1] The extent to which soil redeposition occurs during the laundering of textiles comprising more than 50% by weight of synthetic polymeric materials is reduced by carrying out the laundering operation with an aqueous composition comprising in addition to a detergent a polycondensate containing either ester repeating groups or amide repeating groups, but not both, and at least one active group which is an acidic group or a salt thereof or a watersolvatable polymeric group derived from a water soluble polymer having an average molecular weight of at least 100. The detergent may be an anionic detergent, e.g. the sulphates, sulphonates and carboxylic acid salts derived from natural fatty materials and from petroleum, a non-ionic detergent, e.g. the polyethenoxy derivatives of alcohols, acids, fatty amides and amines, phenols and mercaptans, or a cationic detergent, e.g. amine salts and quaternary ammonium salts. Polycondensates containing ester repeating groups may be derived from the condensation products of dihydric alcohols with dicarboxylic acids and polycondensates containing amide repeating groups may be derived from the condensation products of dicarboxylic acids with diamines, amino acids or lactams or by the self-condensation of lactams, the active groups being introduced into the polycondensates during the course of the main condensation reaction or in a second step following the main condensation reaction. The active groups may be carboxylic, sulphonic or phosphoric acid groups or salts thereof or water-solvatable polymeric groups derived from polyvinylalcohol, polyvinylmethyl ether, poly (N,N-dimethylacrylamide), methyl cellulose, hydroxyethylcellulose or a poly(oxyalkylene)glycol. The polycondensates may be added directly to the laundering liquor or may be added in the form of a solution or dispersion in water and/or an organic solution. Alternatively it may be mixed with a solid detergent which may also contain alkalies, bleaching agents, sequestering agents, fluorescent brightening agents, cellulose or starch ethers and esters and inorganic salts. The laundering liquor may contain 0À0001-1% by weight of the polycondensate. |
