An automatic hot-press for producing blanks for nuts, includes feed means for supplying bars 21 from a magazine by continuously rotating rollers, passing the bars through a heating chamber 1, 4, and then feeding the bars by intermittently rotating rollers 17, 18 to a reciprocating shear mechanism 22 where pieces are cut off the bar and transferred by a gripping mechanism 37 to the forging dies. In the feed path is a radiation sensitive device 61 which records the passing of the end of a bar and starts a counter 59 which receives a counting impulse each time the shear operates. After a predetermined number of operations have been counted, the counter 59 sends a signal to a valve 56 controlling a fluid cylinder 57 which through a mechanical linkage renders the gripper 37 inoperative. The counter then begins to count up to a second predetermined number of cuts and the cut pieces produced which are cut from the trailing end of one bar and the leading end of the next har are rejected to waste. When the second number is reached a further signal is emitted by the counter which restores the gripper 37 to the operative condition. Shear mechanism.-The leading end of the bar 21 abuts a feed stop (65), Fig. 3 (not shown), and a piece 21a is cut off by a knife 27 mounted on a carrier 25, which is reciprocated by a cam 32 operating a bell-crank 30. Return movement of the shear head may be by a second cam or by resilient means. The cut-off piece is retained in a slot 26 in the shear head by the spring-loaded gripper 37, which is opened automatically at each cycle by a cam 47, or manually by a lever 50. The device 61 may be sensitive to radiation of visible or invisible frequency different from the radiation of the hot bar, or may be sensitive to the radiation from the bar, in which case it may be used to prevent operation in the absence of a bar, of if the bar is too cold. In a modification the device 61 is replaced by a mechanical feeler operating an electric switch.</p>
