Method for determination of the count of somatic cells in cows' milk. The method involves a) collection of the cells in the milk sample, b) release of the DNA from the cells from step a), c) hybridization of the DNA from step b) with a nucleic acid probe which is specific for bovine (Bos taurus) DNA, and d) measurement of the amount of hybridization from step c) and comparison with the amount of hybridization of the calibration and reference sample in order to determine the cell count.
