A process for the casting of ferrous metals and particularly rimming steels in ingot or continuous moulds &c. is characterized by supporting in the mould as close as possible to its wall, one or more rod-shaped elements of a length approximating to the depth of the mould, having longitudinal passages and consisting of substances giving off gases assisting a degasifying process. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the elements E comprise a mass of cellulose waste such as sawdust, chipped or fibrous wood, wood wool &c. or a mixture of iron oxide, sodium carbonate, sodium nitrate, calcium fluoride, bound with sodium silicate, in a sheathing of corrugated cardboard, wound cardboard strip &c. In a modification, Fig. 3, for continuous casting the elements E each comprise a fireproof cylinder with perforated sides and a longitudinally grooved filling. The mould is cooled by a refrigerant and a float 43 in the molten metal container C1 melts to produce a viscous substance which collects impurities. |
