Elimination or low flammability oily impurities, spread over the bottom or floating in water, is carried out with a dry powdered, granulated or compressed mixture of products which when heated liberate oxygen. Large surface area oxygen-absorbing substances may also be used as are metal powder and/or scrap which in the electro-chemical potential series are above hydrogen, and/or further catalytically active and combustion-promoting substances. The impurities are covered with these substances and after dry ignition mixture has been lit, the oily impurities underneath are heated, evaporated and after reaching their flame point, burnt without leaving residue.
