New cpds. (I) (where M = Pb, Ba or La and R = alkyl, (meth)allyl) are prepared from (I, M = H) and a metal oxide or hydroxide or salt and alkali. Other methods of salt formation hydrolyse the ester. (I) when polymerised or co-polymerised gives hard products having high refractive index and good transparency, useful for lenses and prisms.
