The tall chimney, or other slender structure with a vertical longitudinal axis, is subject to oscillations. It is double-skinned, and has insulation in the form of mineral wool, fibreglass or foam. This insulation (3) between the outer and inner shells (1, 2) serves as a heat insulating layers, preventing draught losses or low temperatures. There are tings of S-section spacer plates to prevent the two shells from knocking together as a result of torsional oscillations. These compensate for the effect of such oscillations by virtue of the fact that the degree of unwinding of the inner wall (4) of the outer shell (1) is less, by a fixed factor, than that of the unloaded outer surface (5) of the insulating layer.
|
