Pharmaceutical compsns. consist of an antimicrobial (I) covalently attached to a carrier molecule (II) which is so big that it is unable to migrate through the skin, mucous membranes or skin wounds. Pref. the molecules of (I) are sufficiently small that they can migrate through the skin etc. and are esp. those which will cause toxic side effects if introduced into the main blood stream. (II) are esp. natural or modified polysaccharides, natural or synthetic polypeptides, glass (opt. with attached functional gps.) or synthetic polymers. (I) are immobilised without loss of antimicrobial activity. The compsns. may be used, for animals or humans, topically or by introduction into the gastro-intestinal tract without the dangers of resorption of highly toxic antibiotics, of dilution by migration or of inducing sensitisation. In an example, bacitracin A is attached via an amino gp. to cellulose. |
