Battery charging apparatus for dry cells comprises L-shaped slidable contacts 40, 42, 44, 46 co-operating with each other or fixed contacts 70, 72 to receive from one to four cells, there being also fixed contacts 78<SP>1</SP>, 801 for charging a cell of the type having both its terminals at one end, e.g. a transistor battery. With no cells present, springs 78, 80 cause engagement of contacts 40, 42, 70 and 44, 46, 72, and a contact 82 connects the contacts 78<SP>1</SP>, 80<SP>1</SP> so that a circuit is formed between input terminals 86, 88 which includes the above mentioned members, fixed contacts 74, 76, a rectifier 96 and a lamp 98. Terminals 86, 88 are connected to an A.C. supply or to appropriate poles of a D.C. supply. Insertion of a cell between a selected pair of the contacts 40 . . . 46, 70, 72 breaks the short circuit between the selected pair, e.g. at points 40C . . . 46C, to include the cell in the charging circuit. Engagement of a cell with the contacts 78<SP>1</SP>, 80<SP>1</SP> opens the contact 82, Fig. 5 (not shown), to produce a similar effect. The apparatus includes a housing having a batteryreceiving compartment containing the contacts and springs and a rectifying compartment containing the rectifier 96 and indicating lamps 98, 108, Figs. 2, 3 and 4 (not shown). Lamp 108 and switch 110 form a circuit to test the charge of a cell placed between the contacts 40, 42, the switch 110 being normally opened by an extension of the lid of the housing when the lid is closed during a battery charging operation, Fig. 6 (not shown).
