A self arresting rope safety device (10) comprises two pulleys (12, 14), one of which (12) is fixed on a base plate (18) and the other (14) on a support plate (30) which is capable of pivoting on an axis of articulation (32). The pulley (12) is equipped with a first braking surface (28), against which the rope (26) is pressed by a boss (36) of the pulley (14) when the support plate (30) is driven by the tension of the rope (26) towards a first locking position. The pulley (14) is equipped with the second braking surface (38) interacting with the first surface (28) following the pivoting movement followed by the support plate (30) towards a second locking position.
