[Also in Division D1 A liquid-coating solution is applied to the surface of a moving web of film material by rotating a pick-up roller in a trough containing a quantity of the liquid-coating solution, disposing the pick-up roller and a rotatable transfer roller at a spaced distance from each other and rotating the rollers both in the same direction of rotation, transferring at least a portion of the coating solution from the pick-up roller to the transfer roller, conveying the web of film material past the surface of the transfer roller, at a position at least 180 degrees around the transfer roller, in the direction of rotation of the transfer roller, from the position of the transfer coating solution from the pick-up roller to the transfer roller, and applying coating solution carried by the transfer roller to the surface of the web film material. The peripheral speed of the transfer roller is greater than the peripheral surface speed of the pick-up roller. The web of film material may be conveyed in the opposite direction to that surface portion of the transfer roller past which it moves. The surface speed of the web may be not less than the peripheral surface speed of the transfer roller. Apparatus for applying the liquid coating solution to the web comprises a trough for containing a quantity of the coating solution, a pick-up roller mounted to rotate in the trough and receive coating solution therefrom on the roller surface, a rotatable transfer roller disposed in spaced relationship to the pick-up roller and adapted to receive coating solution therefrom, the transfer roller being rotatable in the same direction of rotation as the pick-up roller, and a conveyor roller about which the web of film material is entrained, the conveyor roller being disposed in closely spaced relationship with the transfer roller at a position at least 180 degrees around the transfer roller, in the direction of rotation of the transfer roller, from the position of the spaced disposition of the transfer roller from the pick-up roller, the conveyor roller being rotatable in the same direction of rotation as the transfer roller. The transfer roller maybe rotatable at a greater peripheral surface speed, i.e. in the ratio of approx. 3:2, than the peripheral surface speed at which the pick-up roller is rotatable. The surface speed at which the web is movable maybe greater than or equal to the peripheral surface speed at which the transfer roller is rotatable. A first portion of the coating solution received by the pick-up roller is transferred to the transfer roller, and the remaining portion adhering to the pick-up roller is carried through the gap between the spaced-apart pick-up and transfer rollers and returned to the trough.
