An explosively actuated tool 12 for compressing work 20, e.g. crimping an electrical connector to a conductor, Fig. 1 (not shown), between a fixed die 16 and a movable die 28 on a piston rod 26, includes a cylindrical thermoplastic cartridge 36, preferably of polyethylene, having a closed end 39, in which a percussion cap 40 is housed, and incorporating a thermoplastic plug 38. A propellent explosive charge 41 is contained in the cylinder and the plug has a fusion temperature such that the gases produced by the charge, having driven the plug down the cylinder, can fuze it to the cylinder to retain the gases therein while they cool. |
