A solid electrolyte probe for oxygen determination in a gas, vapour or liquid comprises a short electrolyte tube 3 sealed at the rear by a glass plug 13 to form a reference chamber containing e.g. nickel/nickel oxide or copper/copper oxide powders (to maintain constant O 2 partial pressure) and admixed with e. g. aluminium oxide to prevent sintering. As shown the glass plug is tapered and mates with a conical holder 19 in which it is retained by a spring 20. A platinum electrode 15 is connected by a lead 14 to a screened H.F. terminal socket, 24. The lead passes through a thin platinum plate which prevents molten glass dripping into the oxide powder when the seal is formed. The external electrode is connected by a lead passing through a bore 25 in the holder which houses a thermocouple. Further, as shown, the probe is mounted in a pipe system surrounded by a heating coil 12 for monitoring oxygen in liquid sodium.
