<p>A hydraulic actuator for an automatic gearbox has two pistons (11, 12) mounted in parallel cylinder (13, 14) in a common housing (10). The gear change actuator piston rod (11) has a helical splines (43) having a relatively steep angle so that axial motion of the piston (40) rotates the quadrant (46) which in turn rotates the selector piston rod (12) through the meshing teeth (48, 49). The pump (19) supplies oil through the electro-magnetic valves (23 to 29) which control the motion of both pistons. When the selector piston rod (12) is rotated it actuates a switch which opens or closes one of the valves (23, to 29) causing the piston (40) to move and rotate and initiate the necessary sequence of operations to change gear.</p> |
