Pipe union for butt joined smooth pipes - has rubber seal stretched between telescopic sleeves to grip pipes when released

The pipe union consists of two telescopic, cylindrical sleeves (3, 4) having end flanges which just clear the pipe diameter,. Internally, a cylindrical rubber seal (1) is attached to the Internal faces of the end flanges. When the sleeves are separated to their maximum extent, the rubber seal is stretched and spring loaded pegs (8) on one sleeve locate on the edge of the other to hold the sleeves apart. In this condition, the rubber seal is well clear of the pipes (9, 10) which may therefore be inserted easily into the union, the pegs with the joint positioned centrally in the union, the pegs are depressed, allowing the rubber seal to draw the sleeves together. As it does so, it grips the pipe surfaces securely and a good seal is made by the ridges (2) preformed on the internal surface of the rubber.
